India a Dictatorial Democracy?

I was going through an article on Democracy and its functioning, and there i found a claim that - "India is largest Democracy" of world in terms of the Population. I thought of comparing the same with USA which is oldest Democracy of the World.

Many people are surprised that how Democracy can function in India in wake of the poverty, illiteracy, Caste, region and religious Divide... so is this democracy functioning "RAM BHAROSE"?

Then i thought that is this democracy really democratic? or it is just that the tiger is running in the veil of a cow?

I tried to study it from the angle of the kind of political parties and found that the Killer of Democracy in India Lies there. The system or the constitutions of the Political parties have the key dictator in them. The Constitution of India becomes helpless against the Party constitutions in indian Democracy.


In the USA there are 2 political parties and thus the people with political aspirations have to choose the ideology of any one or they can have an independent ideology without a party.

In india there are more number of political parties than the states in india and this is where the trouble lies.

In India the striking feature of the political parties is the WHIP. This is not an animal but a order of the party office bearers that decide in what way the members of the party vote on important issues.

This dictator called WHIP decides the course the party will take in important matters while voting on important issues in the Parliament or state legislature, irrespective of the personal thinking or ideology.

In USA we saw that while the nuclear deal was voted in the house of representatives or the senate it was both the democrats and the republicans who voted against and in favour. it was the personal decision and was not guided by the WHIP.

Democracy according to me means that it should be guided by personal choice and not a DICTATION. when some one dictates what you have to do, will it mean that you have DEMOCRATIC rights?

NO.. so i believe that India is not a democracy with this WHIP having importance in the party constitution and therefore we need to restudy the effect of the WHIP in the party constitutions to see that how can we make india democratic in real sense.

i agree with u. In fact arvind in his recent address in mumbai, exactly analysed what u have mentioned. our representative does nt ahve any power to represent us and our views in parliament. and our administrative heads are accountable to their chilef and not to public. thus this is not real democracy. It should be direct democracy instead! - Pankti
